Bodily Concerns

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/8-one-minute-better-body-tricks-2568780/

I thought that this link was particularly relevant to this class as all of the photos of people working out and getting fit (and thus those concerned about their physique and outward appearance) were women, with not one being of a man working out. It was posted on yahoo, presumably a place where both men and women might look to for the latest in news, etc. but only considered women as being the one's to need and want assistance in making their "bod[ies] better." This speaks to the societal norm of women being more concerned with their appearance than men, when this may or may not be the truth found in reality.

  1. I love that the # 1 exercise is literally a Kegel.

  3. This kind of thing is everywhere. Also check pictures on cereal boxes and other kinds of food packaging. The advertising is for slimming down, and the picture is always of a woman.

  4. Hm, also one of the "Related" topics under the exercise paragraph was "sex positions that double as a workout".

  5. I find it interesting that not only are all of the pictures involving women, but they are all smiling... This correlation between "needing" to be fit and happiness strikes a cord for me. If anything, it further stimulates the unrealistic idea that someone who is not as fit must exercise to get to this point. Once they have reached this point, they are somewhat "enlightened".

Completely not true. I am all for exercising and being healthy. I think it is something that is completely important, but not for the reasons that this article expresses. If someone were to follow this article or exercise excessively for social conformity reasons, even when you reach that point, you will still be dissatisfied. There will always be something to come along that they will compare themselves to. At some point they have to realize the problem might be them or the negative expressions of the media.
